The Afro-Americans for an Academic Society (AAAS) in the Tri-Cities is a non-profit that strives to send African-American students to college. AAAS works to motivate African-American students to achieve academic excellence. Since the 1990s, AAAS has provided thousands of dollars in scholarships to African-American students.

Bechtel was a sponsor for the Afro-Americans for an Academic Society (AAAS) scholarship for 12 years. As of 2017, Bechtel had donated $28,000 to the AAAS scholarship.
